Nelly Dean, Alison Case

For those like me who loved "The Wuthering Heights" Emily Brontë, you may also enjoy it. I do not guarantee anything. Even I was a little pessimistic: I knew some authors re-wrote a classic by adding their own touch / key. But here, I who'd sworn never to touch one of these books, I decided to give a chance.
What a pleasure to find back  the characters of one of my favorite novels!

The reading begins in the form of a narration letter from Nelly to Mr. Lockwood.
She returns to what she failed to tell him so, it goes back to ... For Nelly, as she explains, she needs to deliver some words. To tell him the way things really have happened. To be heard. And under her narrative, as if by magic, we return to the scene. From her earliest childhood, Nelly grew up with the children's master Earnshaw: Hindley and Catherine. She was very close to Hindley. Venturing into the big house, or outside together. Without social barrier as it must be remembered that Nelly is a servant's child.Until the day when the master returns waith an abandoned child. That day the children's lives or any inhabitants of Wuthering Heights change. Jealousy, hatred will take up more and more as we all know how it started. And Nelly in all this, back to her place. To follow in her mother's footsteps. She will tell how this change has been for her. Deprived of certain pleasures which it can no longer be entitled. How she perceived the atmosphere, worries for her playmate ... The changes that were made in the house. And despite the tragedies that take place in, Nelly refuses to leave. Making you wonder what may well retain her there. Yet, reading her story, we can understand it.

The story of a classical with an another perspective, from of a servant, was quite interesting as the story focuses mainly on her, Nelly Dean. Her environment, her life, the moods, etc.
Of course, there are some changes from the original. It surprised me that ultimately, it did not bother me as I would have thought. Except maybe the last 20-30 pages that seemed sloppy.
Otherwise it was a reading that took me from the beginning and I struggled to close between.

Si vous l'avez lu, qu'en avez-vous pensé ?  / If you have read it what have you though about it?

We never asked for wings, Vanessa Diffenbaugh

I brought back some books to the library, and hence I stopped before the new display. What first caught my eye, the book cover. Beautiful, very beautiful. The author, its name rings me a bell. I thought right away "The language of flowers". And I had been right. I already had books in my pile to read, but I so loved her first novel that I took this one!The history of Letty Espinosa, 33, mother of two children: Alex, 15, and Luna who is 6 years. They all live in San Francisco with Letty parents in a small apartment, in a forgotten building for years, and not in a more favorable neighbouring.Above all, it is the mother of Letty who is responsible for the children's education. For Letty has a concern: motherhood scares her and she has always managed to escape her duty as a mother.Until one day ... Letty has to face her responsibilities, cornered. Her fight to see that she can do it. She knows that her children deserve the best and fight to get there.Between the mother and the eldest, they see themselves as foreigners, the last not trusting her.

Vanessa Diffenbaugh gives us a beautiful story with the subject of motherhood, the family (the word, such as links), responsibilities (have we never have made a mistake and have learned a few things from it?). But also other topics such as injustice, immigration with the famous "American Dream" (hope for a better future for the new generation by taking risks with the laws), the bullying in schools.

I had a hard time to get attach to Letty: how a woman of her age can not take responsibility. It is mainly through her children that I first attached. Their concerns to know that their grandparents will not be there. Especially Alex, who has a passion for birds, and we learn a little also about it as well.
The reading was done slowly, taking time to savor every word. To weigh them. To think.

A very nice novel in the end.
